  • What is MAF and what does it do?

Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is a Christian organisation that provides aviation services for people living in remote areas around the world.

For nearly 60 years, MAF aircraft have been serving isolated and underprivileged men, women and children, by providing a regular flight and freight service bringing the essentials of life into these communities as well as medical care, emergency food, and Christian hope.

MAF is also part of a dynamic worldwide partnership. Today worldwide, the partnership operates 140 aircraft from bases in over 30 countries.

Our purpose is to deliver practical and spiritual care to people in places of deepest human need. Every three minutes, an MAF plane takes off or lands somewhere in the world. These flights enable crucial work by many aid and development agencies, missions, local churches and other national groups.

MAF is a faith-based not-for-profit organisation that recovers a varying proportion of costs from users. Many users are too poor to pay for the assistance they need so MAF subsidises many flights such as medical evacuations. With high costs of aviation and many needy users, we depend on support to help fund the cost of subsidised flights, aircraft maintenance, insurance, fuel and other operational costs.

MAF is serving the Church and communities in remote areas where flying is not a luxury, but a lifeline.

  • Is MAF involved in relief of the effects of the 2004 Tsunami?

Yes. Staff from MAF's operation in Papua, Indonesia were first on the scene in Meulaboh in the hard-hit Aceh province and three MAF aeroplanes including an amphibious one, and a leased helicopter have been supporting relief efforts in that area.

MAF's aircraft are still supporting the ongoing rehabilitation effort in Aceh province.
